Early Potty Training

I have recently been coming across many articles on Elimination Communication. This is basically 'infant potty training' except that it is you as a parent responding to the cues of your child the same way as you do when they are hungry. Thats right - the newborn baby doesn't wear a diaper!!! They 'go potty' from the very beginning! At first, I didn't believe it. Then as I continued to read about it, the more it made sense and now I just find it down right intriguing! I'm not sure if it is something I will ever attempt but it has led me to believe that just maybe our children can be trained earlier then what we think.

As well, I've read bits and pieces of 'The Baby Whisperer' by Tracy Hogg in which she advocates early potty training being easier and better for both parent and child.

So today I bought a potty for my 13 month old (Its smaller and more apporpriate then the one we had for Piper) and I'm going to give it a whirl! Who knows what will come of this early attempt but I do know I have a little girl on my hands who is VERY interested in her sister's trips to the bathroom. Why not take advantage of that? Plus, I'd like to use some of the methods they use with EC while incorporating baby signs. I found this article that suggested that using signs aids in the whole potty training adventure!

Time will tell how this will all turn out but I'm excited to try! I'll keep you posted!

Taitum was so excited about her first time on a potty! (Yes, this is a happy/goofy face NOT a screaming/get me off of this thing face!)

Following her sister's example <3

go for it....samantha was peeing and pooing in the potty before she was even a year!! She loved going to the washroom when Rachel went....however i thought sammy would be a really early potty trainer and she's now 2 1/2 and not fully trained, which could be partly my fault. I totally agree that children can be trained way earlier than we think they can. I think that the main reason why its getting later and later is because of disposable diapers! The baby never feels wet...they pee but never feel it so never learn to associate the feelings of having to pee and just peed. I think cloth diapered babies have more control...but...it still takes the work! Good luck with it all!!

Thanks Andrea! Its worth a try I think. I won't be too crushed if it doesn't work out ... Piper did perfectly fine training at 2 years 4 months old but i'm just curious to see if it can be done earlier....I do realize at this point it has a lot more to do with me being able to read the signs that she needs to go and knowing roughly her schedule but I'm up to the challenge!

I was talking to my mom about EC and she thought it was crazy.... Then I ever so kindly reminded her that she has all 3 of us trained before 14 months, and she explained that she just "read our cues". Which I then reminded her was the same thing as EC, ha ha ha. She then didn't think it was so crazy!!

haha! i think it just sounds shocking at first. The more you read about it the less crazy it sounds! Does this mean Sadie will be trained by 14 months?? ;)

Great Idea Gina---I took the clues from my oldest daughter--she used to give a wee shiver just before she had to go potty---we would scoop her up and put her on the potty and she would go everytime. She was day and night trained by 18 months old. We used to say she trained us----LOL but, bottom line--it did work.
We had to use cloth diapers on both of the girls as they were allergic to the chemicals in the disposable diapers so that may have been one of the reasons they were so easy to train. Keep us posted on how it goes
