Considering the Lily




I attended a home educators' professional development day today.
It was wonderful.
I learned some new things, ate great food, shopped for some homeschool books and had a fun time chatting with other moms.
This year has been one of so many firsts for us.
We've faced various challenges, both educationally and personally.
I can't help but think about what a blessing it has been to be surrounded by other families this year whose journey is similar to ours.
It is nice to know we are not alone and that there are those who are a few steps ahead of us and happy to share their wisdom.
So tonight, here I am, stitching away at a lily that I started at one of today's workshops on embroidery.
I am not really the type to decorate with flowers but I think this one will be going up on a wall when it's completed.
As a reminder that God knows what I need.
And He provides.

Farther Along {A Response}

I came across this song at A Holy Experience blog.
It's been on replay in my head all week.
I've been feeling like it was so unfair that the last years of my grandfather's life were full of confusion, jumbled memories and an inability to truly communicate with us.
I have been missing him for a long time and it felt like that time had been stolen from us.
But I also believe in a God who is sovereign and in control of everything.
Even the things that leave us asking "Why?".
I learned a while ago to not fall victim to my feelings or emotions.
It's O.K. to feel them but not to let them dictate how I will respond.
I have a firm foundation, one which I am overwhelmingly thankful for during the storms of life.
Here's what I know:
All things work together for good to those who love God.
Nothing is able to separate us from the love of God.
God knows the plans He has for us.

There is a reason, an answer to my why.
I will respond with faith, trusting my God who I know to be good.

Educational Summer: Check!



I always look forward to summer.
It doesn't really matter that it's really not that different from the rest of the year for us here at home.
(Contrary to popular belief, we do not take 2 months off because Daddy is a teacher. With 3 littles, time off is when I can sneak off to Walmart after they've gone to bed.)
The warm weather, sunny skies and frequent trips to the beach are vacation enough!
But as anyone knows who has ever cared for little stinkers like mine, messing with the schedule is a big no-no.
They like the rhythm of their day and quite frankly, so do I.
So this whole post is about the slight changes I'm making to our everyday happenings so that life with the crew is a little more summer friendly!




First off: review!
All those phonetic sounds Piper learned this year need to be remembered!
I'm not about to throw all that hard work out the window but, let's face it, daily flash cards are just not going to cut it with my 4 year old!
Instead she gets to do something fun and out of the norm: Reading Eggs!
This is an awesome online program that has 120 lessons and lots of fun games and activities, too!
This is not even work to Piper and she completes her lesson each day while little sisters are napping.
Not only is she reviewing what we've done this past year but she is also learning numerous sight words!




We are still reading through the bible stories in the Beginner's Bible though since the activity book doesn't cover all of them.
For the summer we have also begun Leading Little Ones to God.
This is a fabulous book and is unique in that it teaches who God is and other foundational truths of our faith in a very understandable way.
For example, last week we learned why we can't see God, how we know He exists and how He speaks to us.
When I asked questions this week about what we had learned, Piper was able to answer all my questions without difficulty!
I was very impressed considering that there are very few pictures in the book.
Both girls love sitting and listening to me read this book at breakfast time and it has caused many interesting conversations!



Piper is working on her printing skills this summer.
We are using Handwriting Without Tears Get Set For School workbook.
This book requires only tracing of the letters which is pretty easy for Pipe but I figured it would prepare her for starting the Kindergarten level workbook, Letters and Numbers For Me, in September.
Believe it or not, she adores tracing the letters in her workbook.
She gets a little annoyed at me when I correct her pencil grip but is so proud of every letter that she traces!


You've already had several glimpses of the nature journals we've begun but it too is a summer project.
I'm hoping that we'll stay consistent with it since it is easy for me to forget to look for something interesting to add to the journal when we are outside.
So far Piper has been the one to find things and ask to draw them in her journal.
Thank goodness for her enthusiasm!









One project that I have not yet begun but plan to is a sponser child lapbook like the one above.
The girls have taken interest in who the little boy in the picture on our fridge is and I think summer would be the perfect time to pursue that since we have a tad bit more time on our hands.
I'd love to provide them with regular opportunities to draw pictures to send to him and think of questions to ask since he writes us frequently.



I am really debating continuing our Before Five in a Row books through the summer.
We are having so much fun with this program!
Likely, I'll take it a week at a time and plan to row different books on weeks when there is not a whole lot going on or it is rainy.
I am really hoping for a warm summer though!
We have a garden to tend to, road trips to take and beachs to play at!
I'd be very pleased if the majority of our days were spent outside!



So I don't think this makes us year round homeschoolers...
Quite frankly, I can't imagine going any length of time without learning with these kids!
I'm realizing more and more that educating them is a way of life rather than a system that we can close down for a couple of months each year.
To be honest, even if I could, I wouldn't want to!
I love seeing their curiousity take over and them absorb every last drop of knowledge I impart to them!
Add to that how much I am learning and you've got a group of education junkies on your hands!

Call us crazy but we LOVE (home)school!

Over And Over Again

He is faithful.
He is for me.
In Him, we are more than conquerors.

Over and over I repeat these things in my head.
It's one of the reasons I love to fill my day with music that reminds me of these things.
A life can look so perfect from the outside looking in.
But even the happiest have struggles and trials and mountains to climb.

Catechism Kid

As part of our daily school time, the girls have been working on the first 3 questions of the Catechism for Young Children.
There are 145 questions so we are in no rush.
This will take years to accomplish!
The plan is to master a few before moving on to more.
So we've been reviewing the first 3 since September and are now ready to move on to the next few.
I think the catechism is an excellent way to teach our kids about important aspects of our faith.
The far more daunting task is aiding them in internalizing these truths - a work that I realize I cannot do apart from God's working in their lives.
But, alas, we will provide them with these truths, participate in the conversation these truths stir up, answer the questions they produce and, above all, pray our hearts out for our children!

Anyhow, I wanted to share this little video of Taitum answering her catechism questions.
As always, she participates in everything I work on with Piper.
Being the younger I honestly don't except the same abilities from her as from her older sister but she never ceases to amaze me.
Daily, I would ask her the question "Who made you?" and left it at that until one day, for the fun of it, I asked her all three questions.
I was surprised to discover that she was able to reply to each question without a problem!
She never ceases to amaze me!





Q. 1. Who made you?
A. God.

Q. 2. What else did God make?
A. God made all things.

Q. 3. Why did God make you and all things ?
A. For his own glory.

Ponderings of a Pregnant Skeleton

As we scurry around, preparing for an evening of trick or treating, I can't help but smile.
The livingroom is scattered with human anatomy books, jack-o-lanterns, costume pieces, children's Bibles and skulls.
It's been an interesting week to say the least.
Filled with discoveries of what's inside our bodies and that skeletons and such aren't very scary after all.
A random yet rivetting conversation concerning the meaning of 1 Corinthians 15:55
(I'm consistently amazed at what a 4 year old picks up on!).
And then the traditional decorating, pumpkin carving, costume preparing, filling pumpkin bags with leaves.

I am wondering if perhaps this controversial holiday is another training ground in which we can prepare our kids for real life.
Guiding them through the world and it's ways, helping them to learn truth as a result of it.
This is another opportunity to teach them to see things through the lense of God's Word.
Equipping them to take on the truly scary things of life that someday will inevitably come knocking at their door.

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:6)
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
The LORD is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

And could it be that this night could be but another opportunity to teach these little ones generosity?
To give the candy at the door, to put a smile on an elderly person's face, to connect with neighbors often missed in the hubbub of life?
To offer a real life example of making the most of every opportunity, to engage wisely with our culture and pursue other-oriented acts of love?

Just things I've been considering and thinking about.
Naivete is an uncomfortable choice for me.
So year after year, chances are, I'll continue to ponder this day.

So Happy Halloween, Happy Reformation Day and, if all else fails, Happy October 31st!

Despite being involved in this conversation several times a day, I never cease to take joy in the answer my little girl gives. Not just because she dramatically waves her hands in front of her to symbolize 'washing away'. Its not simply due to the exuberance with which she replies. And although I delight in her ability to begin to understand the foundation of our faith, its not that alone.

My joy is found in the truth of that statement - "He washed all my sins away!". No longer am I held accountable. The price is paid and I am free! So today, Good Friday, is very, very good!  I revel in the truth that through His suffering and death, I am made right with God! My debt is erased, the burden is gone. I am able to live my life full of joy, following after Him!

What mercy was revealed
What selflessness and peace
My fate was surely sealed
Until He rescued me
His pardon for my sin
His bounty for my need
From slavery and shame
I am redeemed!

90 Days Later...

Well, last night was the 90th day of my Read the Bible in 90 Days challenge and, by the grace of God, I accomplished what I set out to do! To be quite honest, I wasn't so sure that this challenge was do-able for me and after signing up, I was left wondering why in the world I thought this was a good idea! But now, in hindsight, I am SO glad I did! I learned so much and have found it to be a very beneficial endevour!

What exactly are the benefits for a busy Mama of young ones to take an hour out of her every day to read a rather enormous and intricate book? I'm glad you should ask because I have a whole list for you!

1. I learned that the excuse of 'I just don't have enough time to read my Bible everyday' is no longer an acceptable one. Despite the fact that I truly do have a very busy life, there are still hours wasted online or watching shows. It really didn't hurt me to spend 1 of those hours in God's Word!

2. I found spending an houring sitting and reading my Bible each day to be far more relaxing than I'd expected. Even the long geneologies did not seem so bad, cuddled up on the couch with a coffee in my hand. I even began looking forward to this time. (Imagine that!)

3. I came to realize how priveleged I am to be able to read the whole Bible! Not only do I live in a country where I am still free to do so but I also live in a time when I am blessed with being able to read the entire revealed Word of God! In the midst of plugging through the OT, my pastor spoke one Sunday in his sermon about how the men and women of the Old Testament longed to see these things revealed, to see all that God was foreshadowing through the sacrifices and events in which they played a part. I was humbled at the thought of this - that all that they had hoped for and longed for in the coming of the promised Messiah is now completely revealed to us!

4. I was amazed at how reading the Bible from cover to cover connected so many things for me. Due to the fact that I read it so fast, the prophecies in the OT were still fresh in my mind when I went on to read the NT where they are stunningly and perfectly fulfilled! Not only that, but I was blown away by what a beautiful love story the Bible is of God chasing after, rescueing and redeeming His people!

5. My curiousty was piqued in so many instances during my readings. Initially, I was rather disappointed that I didn't have time to look very much into the things I wondered about. I felt that this was maybe a downside to the 90 day challenge - no time to study things that you come across and don't quite understand. But in the long run I have to admit that this has been a benefit for me! I am now really looking forward to reading though the Bible again but at a slower pace that will allow for time to study things in greater detail!

6. I was surprised at the impact that the time spent in God's Word had on my 3 year old daughter. One day, when I was reading it, she cuddled up to me and said, "Mama, you love read your Bible!" I agreed and went on to explain to her why it was so important. Often throughout the past few months, I've also had company while reading since she liked to snuggle up to me and read her children's Bible. Without knowing it, I was setting an example for her about the value of reading the Bible every day!

7. I was encouraged by my husband joining me on this journey. It was nice to have someone else sharing this challenge with me in the same room! (Not that I didn't appreciate the online encouragement, but its just different! You know what I mean!) This led to many good converstations between us about what we were reading and caused us to realize that it is likely a good practice to be reading along the same schedule!

8. Finally, this challenge caused thankfulness in my heart towards God! Thankfulness for leading me to this opportunity, for helping me to persevere when I found it difficult, for blessing my heart with His Word, for instilling daily, consistent seeking after Him into my life, for giving me this book that shows me so clearly that He is everything.

So what now? Well, for starters I've printed off a 52 Week Bible reading plan to follow. I've also joined the Spring Reading Thing (you can see my list of books here!). In case you haven't guessed, I am a bit of a book worm!

"Jesus Wants the Rose!"

Readng through the Old Testament as quickly as I am, I am amazed at how terrible the people God uses are. I mean, really! They are not even close to perfect! The drama is comparable to an episode of Grey's Anatomy! And their list of screw ups is pretty endless. Ever read the story of Samson?? Go read it now. Judges 13-16... Shocked?? I mostly remembered the censored Sunday School details myself. Then I read this story about this womanizing, blood-thirsty brute. Yikes! No wonder they censored it! In fact, I'm pretty sure most of these OT stories if put on the big screen would have an 'R' rating. They're pretty bad, even by today's standards. And yet God sees fit to work through these flawed, messed up characters to write His perfect plan of redemption.

The wonderful thing is, He still does - "For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God." 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

Reading about all these Old Testament men and women, I found myself comforted by the thought that despite my imperfections, despite being prone to wander from the God I love, despite beng rough around the edges, God still works out His plan for me and through me perfectly. He loves to use the messed up, flawed, hopeless, overwhelmed, unorganized, rash, despairing, don't-have-their-act-together kind of people. He gets the glory and we get the joy!

Its Almost a New Year! (He's always been faithful to me.)

On the verge of 2011, I have to say I am very excited! Not for any particular reason...there are no big vacations planned, no babies expected and no big purchases that I forsee...but I am looking forward to this year. Really, I have no reason not to! Life has been good! Matt and I were just saying to each other tonight how much we are enjoying our little family and the stage of life we are in with them. I have nothing but good thoughts for the year to come! I'm sure there will be bumps along the way (there always are!) but we are learning more and more to trust God with whatever comes our way (or doesn't), to support and love each other and to be content no matter the circumstances.


But to begin sharing thoughts for the year to come, I thought it would be nice to take a minute to look back on the past year and all we have to be thankful for...

-Matt recieved his B contract this year which was huge! No more worries about employment now! We were also grateful for the opportunity for him to work summer school this past summer!
On the homefront, my sweet hubby has over and over again shown himself to be a fantastic Daddy to our girls and my greatest support and encourager! I love watching him grow in these areas in ways that have far exceeded my expectations! (I love you, babe, and am so happy to begin each new year with you!)

-Piper has been growing and learning so much! It has been a delight to watch! Her speech has improved immensely to the point that we have very few worries about it now! Her and Taitum also took their first trip to Newfoundland this year and were amazing little travellers! Piper has also taken on several new athletic challenges of which her favorite is dance! (No surprise there!) As well, Pipe has made a big change by trading in her nap times for 'quiet time'. She reminds me on a daily basis that she is a big girl!

-This time last year, Taitum was a new baby so 2010 has been chock-full of changes for her! Solid food, walking, being weaned and several wardrobe changes to name a few! Her own little personality is emerging which is so beautiful to see! She is our sensitive, silly girl who's learning to hold her own...but she's still Mama's baby!

-This year has been packed with changes and improvements for me! I`ve gotten a better handle on housework by weekly making a schedule and meal plan. I`ve also been learning to cook a variety of different things AND have even enjoyed it! I`ve been successful in cutting out a lot of waste and saving money too by making everything homemade - thats right! 2010 is the year we said goodbye to Delissio, KD, Campbell`s Soup, disposable diapers and haven`t looked back (well, ok, maybe once...). And, of course, my biggest accomplishment this year - commencing our homeschool journey!

So now, looking ahead to the coming year, I look forward to more personal growth and the joys of watching my little family as it continues to blossom! I can't wait to hear Taitum say new words and maybe even talk in sentences! I am excited for Piper to learn to identify all the letters in the alphabet and know their phonetic sounds!  I`m already marking the calendar for the mini getaways Matt and I have planned! I am super excited for the winter unit I am in the process of putting together for the girls and to try out some of the recipes from my new Kneadlessly Simple: Fabulous, Fuss-Free, No-Knead Breads book I got for Christmas! Such simple things but I can't wait! This is life at its finest!

"What about resolutions?" you may ask. I don't do them. What I do do is take on challenges when they present themselves especially if it means that the end result will be worth the task at hand. For example, starting Monday I'm taking on the Read the Bible in 90 Days challenge at Mom's Toolbox...I know, I'm crazy. But there's nothing like a huge challenge to ring in the New Year! Besides, that's just how I am - go big or go home! Matt's joining me in this endevour, too, which will be nice!
Secondly, I've recently signed up for the 365Project where you take a photo a day. I'm not much of a photographer but I do like the challenge of summing up each day with one particular picture. As well, I am thoroughly looking forward to the end result - a picture journal of an entire year!

God has been faithful for the past 26 years of my life and I know He will continue to be no matter what comes my way. That's why I'm excited about a New Year - Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

So here's to 2011 and all that it holds!

The Christmas Story (Like You've Never Seen It Before!)

I'd heard about this video from my Dad but only just came across it this morning. Piper and I watched it together and LOVE it! So adorable! Enjoy!

I was reminded today about how true this is. But first, some background....

Matt and I have been attending a parenting series at our church recently. They have been showing DVDs based on the book Shepherding a Child's Heart by Ted Tripp. Although we have read the book before, we are still learning SO much! The emphasis is put on the need to deal with what's going on in your child's heart rather then just trying to correct their outward behaviour. Too often we try to manipulate our kids to get them to do what we want and to act how we want without caring about whether their actions are truly coming from their heart. In essence, we are creating little hypocrites by attempting to 'clean' the outside without first considering what is happening inside!



Although we haven't gotten through the whole series yet, we are trying already to implement some of what we are learning. The last video we saw emphasized the need for communication and talking with them about what is going on, why they are acting the way they are, guiding them through it and pointing them to the God who transforms hearts. We have been teaching Piper lately about having the right attitudes about things. Often she gets angry or sad about different situations and we have discussed with her about how such attitudes and actions are not loving towards God or those around her. We are teaching her to pray about how she is feeling and ask God to help her and to change her heart, since only He can. I must say it is pretty adorable to see her do this and then go on with what she was doing before with a better attitude. But it is encouraging too to see this habit being formed in her life already. Truthfully, I'm learning to apply this in my own life as well!

So this brings me back to the quote about how shaping the child shapes the parent as well. Today Piper needed my help in the bathroom. While I was in there with her, she noticed her bath toys sitting in the closet and asked for the rubber ducky. I said no, that he was only for bath time and that (I thought) was the end of it. I went back to the kitchen to continue making some cookie dough. From the kitchen, I could see Pipe sitting on her bed looking forlorn. I wasn't really sure why (I'd completely forgot about the ducky incident) but I continued to keep an eye on her to see what was happening. Soon I heard her talking, "God, I sad. Please help me. Amen." I stopped what I was doing and went in. I asked her what she was talking to God about. She explained that she was sad because she couldn't have the rubber duck so she told God! Needless to say my heart was filled with joy to see that my little girl was truly learning that God is the one to go to when there is something going on in your heart. But it was also so humbling for me. How often to I go through my day annoyed, anxious, angry or just plain sad and not take it to God? What my girl is learning is something I need to remember and cultivate in my own life - "Cast your cares on Him for He cares for you."

"Pray Like Crazy"

I came across the following on John Piper's site, DesiringGod.org and thought it so true and worth sharing...

An Encouragement and Precaution for Parents

Jesus tells of two sons:

What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” And he answered, “I will not,” but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, “I go, sir,” but did not go. (Matthew 21:28-30)
I draw this advice for parents from these words: Do not despair of the rebel, and do not assume the heart of the compliant child is with you.
Which means practically, pray like crazy for both of them. And keep showing both of them the gospel of undeserved, blood-bought grace.

Really great advice for a Mama who might possibly have one of each! ;)

As a Christian, I consider every year the pros and cons of celebrating Halloween. On the one hand, I have so many good and fun memories of Halloween as a child and even now see it as an enjoyable, imaginative event. But I am also not so fond of the scary stuff and the gruesome, evil things it can sometimes 'celebrate'. And so I think its my responsibility, especially as a parent, to evaluate what our family's motives are in participating. This year I came across an article which I feel sums up my thoughts and feelings about Halloween well. This paragraph in particular:

Many of the ideas and rituals that have contributed to the Halloween mish-mash aren’t congruent with our beliefs. However, setting aside times to remember or honor those we love that have passed away (hopefully to be with our Savior Jesus) is not a bad idea. [Referring to "All Saints'/Souls' Day"] On a less somber note, wearing Spider-man costumes, making funny faces on vegetables, and engaging in neighborhood activities where one can both give and receive hospitality is not something we oppose. Fictional fantasy tales of monsters and elves even scary ones are not wholly inappropriate either, whether punctuated on this particular weekend or sprinkled throughout the year in classic tales from authors including Tolkien and Lewis. We regard Halloween as a second-hand issue and ask that every Christian examine their response to the modern-day Halloween celebration in our culture.

I encourage you to read the whole article, especially if you are a Christian struggling with the good and the bad of October 31st. Considering that today is Reformation Day too, I add the words of Martin Luther "to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen. " Whatever your stance may be on the whole Halloween issue, be sure it is one that does not go against conscience.

As a side note, this year did give me a great opportunity to talk to my three year old about how powerful God is. The scary things she saw this Halloween at the stores or while trick or treating provided the perfect chance to teach her about how God protects her because he is stronger and bigger and more powerful then any frightening thing!

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)
