12 Steps to a Happy Morning

1. Make sure your coffee pot is set to turn on in the morning so that when you get up there is a fresh pot waiting for you. If you don't have this feature go buy one that does. This is a very important step!

2. Make sure your hubby knows that the best way to wake you up in the morning is by giving you a back rub.

3. Get up before the kids do and take a shower. Its always best to be one step ahead of them!

4. Put on some cozy pjs or loungewear so you stay cozy for at least another hour.

5. Teach your kids to stay in their rooms until a certain time. In our case, that is 8am but do whatever is plausible for your family. Having a few minutes to enjoy your coffee does wonders for starting your day with a smile!

6. Kiss your hubby goodbye as he heads out the door. And tell him you love him and he's the best man in the world.

7. When you get the kids up take some time to snuggle them while they are still all warm and cozy. Also, this is the best time of the day to get some cuddles without them trying to run away from you to go do more important kid things. Take advantage of this moment!

8. Find enjoyment in the fact that they are the only people in the world who will dance and giggle at the sight of you in fleece pjs and a towel on your head at 8am in the morning!

9. Plan on yummy, satisfying breakfasts in the morning. This is the one meal where you'll rarely have to fight with them to eat what they're given. More often than not they ask for seconds. Count it a victory.

10. While preparing this lovely meal, take time to listen in on the joy they find in being reunited after 13 hours of separation. Tuck this scene away in your head for later in the day when they are fighting over a toy.

11. Sit and eat breakfast with them. You'll be surprised at the amount of things they have to tell you about after a whole night. Plus its important for 3 year olds to hammer out what exactly the plans for the day are.

12. Together thank Jesus for giving you all another day to spend together, for a Daddy who works hard so that Mama can be home and for the breakfast that you get to enjoy. It is advised that you also ask for patience at this point too, because after a happy morning, its time to start your day!

My second week of meal plans and I'm trying several new recipes which is always interesting! I learned my lesson last week about how frustrating it is to just wing it! I didn't feel like going grocery shopping on the night I had planned to, so I didn't! I thought it would be OK since I was sure I had all the things I needed to make a chili the next night rather than the meal I had planned...error #1: I didn't check to make sure I had everything! So 3pm the next day when I went to grab the meet from the freezer to thaw, I realized there was none! I searched around to come up with other ideas but had only partial ingredients for anything I could think of. Frustration!! Finally, I decided to make the chili with chicken instead of ground beef. It turned out alright but the kids hated it. Ah well, live and learn, right? Needless to say, I went grocery shopping that night!

Although I'm going to aim to get to the store on the night I have planned, I'm also trying to do other things to avoid nights like those. First, I'm making an effort to buy a few extra things every grocery trip that can be used to make a quick and easy meal when need be! For us thats spaghetti sauce and pasta or pizza sauce and english muffins. Secondly, I'm making a point to double recipes that can be frozen so I can have back up plans in the freezer! Because, lets face it - some days are diamonds and some days are NOT!

I thought I should point out too that my Saturday plan is generally pretty skimpy...leftovers for lunch and an easy meal for supper. And I don't plan any snacks for that day. We're out a lot on Saturday so its whatever we can grab quickly on the way out the door! For Sundays, I don't plan anything at all. Mama needs a break and so its a 'fend for yourself' kind of day! Generally there are lots of leftovers in the fridge that need to be used up so that works out well. And Piper enjoys the opportunity to get to pick what she wants for lunch or supper!

That's all for this Monday! Have a great week!

Snowed In! (and Out)

This was our second week of winter themed activities. We didn't get as much accomplished as I had planned. With Daddy home due to a snow day we were able to spend that day out and about which was rather nice! Here is what we did on other days:

We made this cute little name snow man, an idea I got from Musings of Me. Piper did pretty good ordering the letters to her name correctly. She always mixes up the placement for 'E' and 'R' but we're working on it! The piece of paper that we used for the snow on the ground was from Confessions of a Homeschooler's Scissor Skills which Piper had just completed.

We played this Skating Snowflakes Game from the Winter Fun pack at Itsy Bitsy Learners. Rolling the dice was the best part of the game for Pipe!

This counting snowflakes activity was fun! We took turns placing the snowflakes and counting them and finding the right number. I found this at Itsy Bitsy Learners, too.

Next up, the snowman letter match from Confessions of a Homeschooler's Letter S Unit. She had to find the letters to the word 'snowman'.

This cute little penguin was created by Piper at a program she attends at our local library. She was EXTREMELY proud of him! (If you live in my area, I HIGHLY recommend the public library programs! They are free, available for all ages and SO good!)

As you can see here, we switched spots one morning and did some of our work on the couch instead of at the table. I thought it would be helpful to try a new place since lately I've found it somewhat difficult to keep Piper's attention. This change of scenery worked well except for the fact that Taitum could reach everything and so we had to spend some time retrieving some things from her!
Anyhow, what Piper is working on here is an exercise from Musings of Me's Snow Unit. She sorted things that started with the letter 'S' from those that started with another letter. Since we had never done anything like this before, she found it rather challenging at first. Once she got the hang of listening for the "S' sound though, she did a wonderful job!

I snuck this picture in because it is Piper's new obsession! I trip over find these little 'castles' that she has built for varying animals everywhere!

We read Snip, Snip... Snow! this week and also cut out some paper snowflakes! Piper was so bummed out about this 'boring' activity until she saw the result! Haha! I loved her reaction!

She wanted to take some pictures of me and my snowflakes too...

A budding photographer don't you think? She even told me where to hold the snowflake!

Like the girl in the story, we too used the clippings from the snowflakes to make a snowman.

This is our "What Can You do in the Winter?" wall. I printed off the mini book from Itsy Bitsy Learners Winter Fun Pack and then I printed off pictures of the winter activities she's done so far. The third picture is her drawing of herself doing the activity (can you tell what her favorite color is this week??). As she does the other activites, we will add them to our wall!

Finally, we checked out some close up pictures of real snowflakes at SnowCrystals.com. Then we caught some of our own and brought them inside to look at. They were a little disappointing since they weren't the really pretty, perfectly formed kind but the kids enjoyed it regardless.

I hope you enjoyed viewing our winter-y week! From the look of things outside my window, we will have much more opportunity to explore winter things in the weeks to come! Having fun things to look forward to makes this weather seem not so cold and dreary! But for this stormy night I think we will cuddle up for a cozy movie night!

Chocolate Avacado Goodness!

I made these this evening and just couldn't wait to tell you all about them! Initially, I just wanted to use up an avacado that I had bought for a lunch this week but it ripened faster then I expected. So I flipped through my Deceptively Delicious cookbook and came across a Chocolate Cupcake recipe that called for 1 cup of avacado. Having only one avacado, I halved the recipe and got to work. In went the avacado puree, in went the sugar, in went the vanilla and balsamic vinegar...when all of a sudden I realized I had no eggs! Mad at having forgot that I needed eggs and had just wasted a perfectly good avacado I was about to toss it all when one word popped into my head: "Google!" (What did people do before Google?!) So I searched alternatives for eggs and came across the suggestion of using a half a banana! Well, bananas I did have so I figured why not give it a try! I beat together the rest of the ingredients, threw it in the oven and 10 minutes later, out came the yummiest, most delightful little cupcakes! So moist, so chocolate-y!

The biggest fan was Taitum since she got to lick the beater for the first time ever since there were no eggs in it! Now that is one happy camper!

I highly recommend buying or borrowing this cookbook! So far I have LOVED the recipes in it! And if your kids are picky about vegetables this is a great way to sneak them in! Even if they're not, we could all do with a few more veggies in our diet!

Oh to be a Toddler!

I've been continuing to attempt to do specific (Tot School) things with Taitum each day in an effort to spend one-on-one time with her and expose her to some new concepts. Up until lately, I have found this rather difficult. Her attention span is so short! But I just went along with what she wanted to move to next and simply enjoyed the time with her. Lately though, she has really begun taking an interest in the things I present to her to do! Also, she has picked up things that I had shown her how to do before but that she, at the time, showed no interest in! For example, for Christmas she recieved a Vtech Crazy Legs Bug. I tried to show her how the shapes fit together but to no avail. Then this evening I heard her calling for me from her room (She yells "Mum!" with the cutest little voice!). When I went down to see what she wanted, she started showing me how she could put ALL the shapes in place herself! We were both so excited! Each time she'd put a shape in place we'd dance and clap and laugh! These are the sweetest moments of parenthood!

So here are a few more things we've tried together!

Putting straws in the shape sorter container. Taitum LOVED this! She'd put the straws in and then I'd dump them out and she'd start all over again!

We tried spooning some pom poms from one side of the egg carton to another. She found it very difficult to keep the pom pom on the spoon. As you can see here she tried to pick up the pom poms and place them on the spoon rather than scooping them. I always find it so interesting to see how a toddler problem solves!

Taitum loves playing with the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics we have but finds it very hard to get the letters in when it is on the fridge. Instead, I often place the toy on a baking sheet which makes it far easier for her to place the letters in the right spot. She gets so excited when she does it right and the song plays!

One evening Piper was using water paints and so I thought I'd give it a try with Tait too. We used Q-tips to paint with and I think she found that much easier then using a paint brush and she was *less* tempted to put it in her mouth compared to when we fingerpaint. This activity was short lived though....

Before I knew it we were on the floor putting Q-tips through the holes of one of her stacking cups! This spontaneous activity lasted for quite some time!

This was the same day that Piper did her 'Snowflake Fishing' game. Taitum had wanted so badly to try it but as soon as she got a hold of one of the cards it went right into her mouth, ruining the snowflake card (I know, I know! I should have laminated them!) Anyhow, as an alternative I got out her Melissa and Doug Magnetic Bug Catching Game that the rod we were using actually belonged to. She got frustrated with it so started holding just the magnet part to pick up the pieces, as you can see in the pic! Big sister was nice enough to put the pieces back in place for her afterwards!

In order to be more efficient with my planning time, I'm trying more and more to use things that I'm doing with Piper for Tait's 'Tot School'. Of course, the activity has to be changed in order to be appropriate for her age but at least the materials are alrady prepared and close by. Here the girls are using Piper's ABC Letter Box to work on spooning and pouring. Taitum would simply scoop the pasta up with a spoon and transfer it to one of the muffin tin cups. Piper had a few more steps - she had to spoon the pasta into the measuring cup, then pour it into the muffin tin cups.

This activity started out really well since both girls LOVE getting therir hands into this kind of stuff. But it quickly went down hill when Taitum figured out the joys of throwing the pasta into the air....lovely! I ended up having to remove her from the activity for a few moments and when she returned I sat with her, hand over hand to do the spooning to get the point across that this is how we do the activity! After that she seemed to do much better, although I did have to still give some gentle reminders that we don't throw the pasta....

This Fisher Price Learning Piggy Bank has been another fun Christmas gift that the girls have gotten a lot of enjoyment from! You put the coin in and the pig either sings to you or counts the coins, depending on what setting you have it on! Not only is this a great exercise for their fine motor skills but its been a wonderful way for them to practice taking turns since they both want to play with it as soon as its brought out!

Taitum is also learning to sit at a table rather then a high chair for snack times. She is so happy to be doing 'big girl' things like this! I plan to start introducing open top cups soon as well (heaven help me!). For now we are practicing with smoothies since they are thick enough to not come pouring out everywhere!

And Tait's latest personal accomplishment: climbing the stairs! She came up with this one all on her own! And now that she knows how to do it, thats ALL she wants to do when we are down stairs! Needlesss to say, we've installed yet another baby gate! :)

The hardest part about this age: EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT TO THEIR MOUTH! Its enough to drive a Mama mad! The spoons I can understand. Its a little confusing. And I have to admit, the faces she makes when she puts a pom pom in her mouth are pretty hilarious! But paint, play doh, purple uncooked pasta, wooden blocks....ick! Oh well, I'm sure in a few years from now, I'll look back on these pictures and smile! Besides, how are you going to know what flavor something has unless you taste it? ;)
